Another wooden rudder, another crack!

During a recent condition survey on a Jeanneau yacht from the mid 1980's the hull and rudder were inspected as normal.  The rudder was found to be of a wooden construction which is normal for vessels made during this period from the Jeanneau yard.  The rudder was found to be cracked in way of the rudder stock, which apart from the obvious loss of structural integrity, this breach will have allowed water to ingress.

Crack in wooden rudder

Note the darkening in the wood in the upper section of the wood visible after the GRP coating was removed. Clear evidence of potential rot.

This survey was a condition survey for the owner's insurance company, and it is clear how important regular maintenance and monitoring of the vessel's hull and fixtures and fittings are.
