Hamble Marine Surveys selected by the RYA & MCA
Julian Smith of Hamble Marine Surveys has been selected by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) as part of a small group of leading marine surveyors from around Europe to attend a 3 day training course covering the MCA Code of Practice MGN 280. The Marine Coastguard Agency (MCA) were involved in the course providing clarification and training on various aspects contained in the Code of Practice. As a RYA/MCA Code of Compliance Examiner, Julian Smith is able to inspect vessels looking to comply to the Code of Practice for commercial operations.
Whether a Yacht or Motorboat less than 24m or a RIB, any vessel looking to be operated commercially for instance for charter or teaching, must comply with the regulations laid down by the MCA. The details of all aspects of the 'Code' whether design, safety, equipment, operation and conduct, are all covered in this Marine Guidance Note produced by the MCA.
20 leading marine surveyors from around Europe were selected to attend this technical workshop, which is the frst of its kind. The RYA & MCA were keen to work with these selected marine surveyors to understand how this fundimental document (MGN 280) can be improved and its limitations.
Technical feedback was achieved by the surveyors working with the RYA and MCA by actually surveying various types of vessel with all parties in attendance. Further training and technical feedback was achieved working with Ocean Safety in Southampton where hands-on training in lifejacket and liferaft servicing was given and a review of all current safety equipment.
Julian Smith of Hamble Marine Surveys is an approved RYA/MCA Code of Compliance Examiners and with over 20 years experience in the marine industry he is able to assist owners and operators in preparation of individual or fleets to meet the MCA Code of Practice.
